Beef Update

IFA Livestock chairman Brendan Golden said factories must start reflecting the production costs on farms in beef prices offered. He said decisions are being made on farms that will impact on cattle supplies for the coming months and it is critical our hard won consistent weekly supply patterns are protected. He said there are over 92,000 more cattle processed to-date this year against a Bord Bia projection of 110,00 to 120,000 more cattle in total for the year. He said live exports to Northern Ireland are expected to increase for the later part of the year for slaughter fit and forward store cattle, UK and EU prices are strong, the latest Prime export Benchmark price is 12c/kg above our price. He said the beef supply situation is well balanced with no over hang of beef in the market place. He said farmers cannot be expected to take on the risks and costs associated with winter finishing without strong price commitments from factories.

Sheep Update

IFA Sheep committee chairman Kevin Comiskey has called out the lack of meaningful and direct support for sheep farmers from the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and the sheep processing factories. Kevin Comiskey said IFA have highlighted directly to the Minister and the factories earlier this year the importance of direct supports for sheep farmers and strong lamb prices to maintain our production systems and ensure the orderly marketing of lambs throughout the year given the production costs farmers are exposed to. He said the Minister has not yet come forward with a targeted payment for sheep farmers to support the orderly feeding and finishing of lambs which is certainly contributing to the increase in numbers of under finished lambs presented to factories.
