PotatoPotato Market Reports

Potato Market Update 19th October

Harvesting continues this week; reports indicate that conditions have deteriorated significantly and with more wet weather forecast for the next week it will likely put a stop to liftings in many areas. Harvest this year is already approximately 10 days behind last year. With reduced yields and harvesting conditions disimproving rapidly the outlook of the season is changing. Retail demand and home consumption has improved and the processing sector should see a small boost as we approach school mid-term season. Peeling material is being quoted in the region of €230 – €270 this week.

All European forecasts are reporting a reduction in yields this year which will shift the supply chain. It is estimated that the crop in Poland will amount to around 6.1 mt’s, – a million tonnes or 15% lower than last year. Various export opportunities are being explored across Europe. Irish markets have received some interest for processing varieties.

In the U.K. lifting has progressed well again this week and, in the Midlands, and the South is down to the last 10% in the traditional maincrop areas where growers are now concentrating on loading into store. In Scotland clearance is now up to 80%.
