Home consumption and retail sales remain stable with some increased demand. New season crop is trickling onto the market, however, heavy rainfall following this week’s storm conditions will make harvest conditions extremely challenging. So far it is reported that numbers under plants are low but size is quite good. It is reported that some Markies have been exported to the Canary Islands where there is high demand for stock this year.
In European countries there has been more stability in the markets this week and prices have held at recent levels. In the U.K. storage is only just starting and is “two weeks later than last year”. There has been persistent rain down the western side of the country. Lifting in some areas has been restricted all week. Prices were under some pressure, however, this week there are signs of more stability as more growers move over to storage and there have been fewer supplies offered because of the wet soil conditions.
