There was no change in Irish pig prices last Friday with farmers reporting quotes of €2.06 – €2.10 available from processors in ROI. Producers selling to NI are reporting that considerably higher prices are available.
The average European price for a grade E carcass pig for week 1 was €2.10/kg which is 3% higher than prices for the same week last year according to the Commission, and it is back -1.5% on last month’s prices and .5% with the previous weeks average price.
African swine fever (ASF) has made itself known very early this year unfortunately. Genotype II of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been found on the Italian island of Sardinia – in addition to genotype I which is known to be endemic.Reportedly, this outbreak occurred in September last year but was only reported to the World Organisation of Animal Health in January of this year. The outbreak is reported to have occurred on a very small farm and Italian authorities have said it has not spread. This further highlights the importance of strict biosecurity.
The weekly throughput figures for week ending the 14th of Jan was 67,553 of which 1,849 were sows.
