Pig Market Update 18th September

There was a 4c/kg drop in Irish pig prices on Friday last in ROI. Producers are reporting quotes ranging from €2.24 – €2.30 available from processors in ROI. Prices in Northern Ireland and the UK are still strong with strong demand. The current Standard Pig Price in the UK reported by AHDB  is £205.80/kg (€2.44/kg). This price has not declined. 

In ROI the throughput for week ending the September 15th was 62,460 of which 1,991 were sows. 

Pig slaughter figures year to date are now running practically on par with last year’s figures, with .1% of an increase observed to date this equals 2,202 more pigs through the processing plants this year. 

The EU Commission trade of pig products report published on the August 29thdetails that EU pigmeat exports are back -3.5% for the period Jan-May 2024 when compared with the same period in 2023. China remains the largest market for EU pigmeat, despite a 14.7% decline in exports compared to the same period in 2023. United Kingdom is the second-largest destination, accounting for 20.3% of exports, with a minor 0.7% decrease. Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines are other significant markets, with varied growth.
