Pig Market Update 8th January

As we enter into the second week of 2025, there was no change to Irish pig price on Friday last or the previous Friday with producers reporting quotes ranging from €2.08 – €2.13 available from processors in ROI and a good demand for Irish pigs. 

The EU average price for week 51 for grade E carcass was €1.92/kg excluding vat.  Which is unchanged since last month and is -9% behind last year’s EU average price for the same week. 

The weekly throughput for week ending December 29th was 18,613 of which 282 were sows. While the throughput for week 1 of 2025, ending January 5th was 51,702 of which 1,633 were sows. There were 3.157M fattener pigs processed in our ROI plants in 2024 vs 3.148M in 2023.

Soybean prices may face downward pressure in 2025 due to strong global supply forecasts. A record harvest is expected in Brazil and Argentina, with Brazil projected to produce 169.0 Mt, up from 153.0 Mt last year. The US also had a strong 2024 harvest, adding to global supplies.
