IFA Calls for Extra Bring Centres for Used Tyres Following Success of Recycling in Cootehill

IFA Environment Chairman Thomas Cooney has called on Environment Minister Denis Naughten to announce additional recycling dates for farm waste tyres, following the unprecedented level of support for the service at the first bring centre in Cootehill, Co. Cavan last Saturday.

Thomas Cooney said, “Over 400 tractors, cars and jeeps, brought in almost 900 tonnes of waste farm tyres to be recycled. This is an extraordinary commitment to the environment by farmers in the North-East and a very strong response to Minister Naughten’s recycling initiative”.

He added, “Given the huge level of interest for this initiative and farmers’ willingness to recycle, Minister Naughten should now announce a nationwide roll-out to ensure this waste stream is removed off farms and recycled sustainably.”

Concluding he said, “This recycling of farm tyre waste builds on the farming community’s strong record. For example, each year farmers recycle almost 27,000 tonnes of farm plastic and hundreds of tonnes of other waste streams, such as meal bags and chemical drums.”

The remaining dates for the waste tyre bring-centres are as follows:

Tuesday Oct 9th New Ross Mart, Co. Wexford 9am to 5pm
Saturday Oct13th Athenry Mart, Co. Galway 9am to 5pm
Saturday Oct 20th Gortdrum Mines, Monard 9am to 5pm

This service is only available to farmers and approximately up to three tonnes of tyres (330 car tyres) can be recycled for only €45.
