Beef Update
IFA livestock chairman Brendan Golden said supplies continue to tighten with last week’s throughput down for the sixth consecutive week when bank holidays are considered. He said the weekly throughput has dropped by over 7,000 head since the end of April to just 30,112 last week with further reductions anticipated in the coming weeks as numbers of finished cattle are just not on the ground. Brendan Golden said the on-going tightening of supplies and demand for beef in our key markets will drive the trade with no evidence of any weakening in the market place particularly as we face into the summer festival season. He said there is a huge variance in prices paid by factories to farmers and in the prices available from factory agents in the marts and farmers should shop around and sell hard to maintain control of the market. The IFA livestock chairman said weakening of beef prices will not be tolerated by farmers given the broader market conditions and the extreme input cost inflation beef farmers are enduring.

Sheep Update
IFA Sheep committee chairman Kevin Comiskey said there is no justification in the market place for the attempts by factories to drop lamb prices. The IFA sheep chairman said hogget numbers have all but dried up at this stage and lamb supplies are running 5,000 a week below last year’s levels. He said demand for sheep meat is strong and will increase as the Eid al Adha festival approaches in early July. Kevin Comiskey said live shippers are already very active in the marts buying lambs for this trade and freely paying well above what some factories are offering for lambs. He said farmers should strongly resist the attempts by factories to reduce prices and consider the mart outlet if factories are not stepping up to the plate where live export buying is underpinning the trade. The IFA sheep chairman said the importation of over 4,000 lambs from Northern Ireland by sheep factories in the week before they decide to attempt to drop prices to Irish farmers does not stack up. He said clearly there is strong demand for lamb in the market place and this must come through to farmers in strong stable prices for sheep meat to reflect our on farm production costs.
