Pig Market Update 17th April

There was no announced increase in pig prices on Friday last, however, it’s reported  processors have given an increase of 2c/kg. Farmers are reporting also quotes of at least €2.17 – €2.25 available from processors in ROI.

The average European price for a grade E carcass pig for week 14 was €2.19/kg (excluding vat), which is still behind by -7% on prices for the same week last year according to the Commission but is up 1% on last month’s average price. 

The weekly throughput for week ending the 14th of April was 64828, of which 2052 were sows. The National Pig Health Symposium took place on Tuesday in the Curragh, Kildare from 3pm. There was a large turnout of both farmers and industry to hear presentations from guest speakers Bernard Jackman, Professor John O’Doherty and Peter van der Voorst. A panel discussion of farmers Joe Healy, Jason McGrath and Sarah Hanley Pig Executive  ended the session which was chaired by Michael McKeon. Discussions continued over a hog roast provided by Jonathan Marry.
