Pig Market Update 2nd October

There was a 4c/kg drop in Irish pig price on Friday last in ROI processors.  Producers are reporting quotes ranging from €2.20 – €2.26 available from processors in ROI. Prices in Northern Ireland and the UK are still strong with strong demand for pigs. The Standard Pig Price in the UK reported by AHDB currently is £2.05/kg (€2.45/kg). This remains pretty much unchanged for most of the year to date.

In ROI the throughput for week ending the 29th of September was 65649 of which 1678 were sows. When climate and geopolitical risks intersect, grain markets surge, as seen yesterday on Euronext. Iran’s missile strike on Israel raised concerns of conflict, pushing oil prices up by over 5% before stabilizing. Dry weather threatens wheat in the US Great Plains and crops in South America, but attention is focused on Russia. The Voronezh region, the 5thlargest grain region in Russia, declared a drought emergency. As a result, Euronext reports December ‘24 wheat hit it’s highest since July 31st , while November ‘24 corn reached it’s peak since July 26th. Rapeseed also gained over €10/t, nearing the €480/t resistance level according to Agritel.
