Pig Market ReportsPigs

Pig Market Update 30th October

There was a drop of 6c/kg to Irish pig price on Friday last with producers reporting quotes ranging from €2.08 – €2.12 available from processors in ROI. This further drop of -6c/kg is certainly disconcerting for farmers. Further drops must be resisted. The SPP (Standard Pig Price – no premium) in the UK reported by AHDB currently is £2.04/kg (€2.45/kg), while the APP All Pig Price, the average price for all pigs is £2.06/kg (€2.48/kg).

The EU average price for week 42 for grade E carcass was €2.00/kg.  This represents a drop of -1.4% over the past month and is -6.8% behind last years EU average price for the same week.

African Swine Fever (ASF) is spreading in western Germany, particularly in Hesse’s Bergstraße district, where wild boar deaths have surged. As reported by the WOAH, Since the first infected animal was found in July, cases have risen to 74, with outbreaks in Einhausen, Bürstadt, and Biblis. A recent carcass search uncovered 44 dead boars, 25 of which tested positive for ASF, and one infected boar was even found outside the core containment area. New measures, including expanded buffer and infected zones, plus additional fencing, aim to contain the spread. Currently, 9 pig farms in the region, including 8 in Hesse, are affected. Earlier this month, the UK government banned personal imports of pork to prevent ASF from the EU, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Switzerland.
