There was no announced change to Irish pig prices last Friday with farmers reporting quotes of €2.28 as an average Irish price. However, some farmers are now reporting top prices of circa €2.38 – €2.42 available.
The average European price for a grade E carcass pig for week 16 was 239.5c/kg which is circa 25% higher than prices for the same week last year. The gap between the Irish average price of €2.28/kg and the EU average price must be bridged and Irish farmers must be allowed to receive higher prices reflective of EU levels to achieve a sustainable margin for their pigs.
On Wednesday the 3rd of May, the IFA launched its DNA survey results for 2022 which determined results of 97% assigned for Irish retailers in support of BBQA pigmeat; whereas the foodservice sector results showed 60% assignments of Irish product.
