Retail sales and home consumption remain strong and appear to have finally stabilised following the unsettled period since the pandemic. A small window of more settled weather conditions allowed some harvesting to take place earlier this week but the extremely wet conditions which followed will put a stop to all harvesting for the near future. Areas in Cork in particular experienced seriously heavy downpours. As we approach November, harvesting conditions will be much more challenging and subsequent losses will be increased.
In the U.K and Scotland, harvesting is also reported to be extremely challenging. Clearance of ware in Scotland is around 60% and the concern now is to get crops lifted before cold weather arrives. Lifting of maincrop on mainland Europe is proceeding well, with clearance pushing on to 70% in Northern France and yields reported to be good.
