There are no changes in the market this week with all producers moving product at unchanged prices. Some growers are receiving enquiries about the availability of product later on in the season as buyers try and secure limited supplies. The annual stock survey is almost completed and as expected it shows a significant drop in potato tonnages compared to recent years.
Whether there will be enough product to see out the season remains very much in the balance. Obviously, this will depend on consumption levels, timing of new season potatoes, availability of imports etc. However, if these factors remain normal then the current stock levels will struggle to supply the market towards season end. There has been some more planting in the south and south east however, it remains minimal and is now rain interrupted again. Over the UK planting has also resumed with at start now being made in Eastern regions. The dry Winter in the east of England has kept reservoir volumes on the low side. This could prove significant later in the year if soil moisture levels are not significantly replenished.
